A Christmas Carol

Author: Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens' Background by Scott Slaughter

A Christmas Carol is the classic novella by English author Charles Dickens, first published by Chapman & Hall in December 1843. I'm not sure if anyone isn't familiar with the story of bitter, cold-hearted and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation to an ideological, ethical and emotional man thanks to the supernatural visits by Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come.

The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim and A Christmas Carol was one of the greatest influences in restoring the old Christmas traditions of England.

As a bonus, this version also includes My Father As I Recall Him by Mamie Dickens which is her book of reminisces about her father.

The “O Antiphons” refer to the seven antiphons that are recited (or chanted) before the Magnificat during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours in Western Christian traditions.

This small guide describes the seven O Antiphons and a brief story behind them.
